The Surprising Benefits of Napping Every Day!
Updated: 4 days ago
Napping may have benefits for mood and clarity, but a nap isn’t always the best choice.
Naps may make you feel groggy or leave you struggling to fall asleep at night.
Taking a 20-minute nap before 2 or 3 p.m. may be your best bet for feeling refreshed.
Hey there! So, let’s chat about napping! You know that feeling when your eyelids are getting heavy in the afternoon? Ugh, it’s the worst! But is giving in to that urge a good idea? Or will it just leave you feeling like a zombie? Well, it turns out that in many cases, taking a nap every day isn’t such a bad idea after all!

“Daily napping offers significant benefits for mood, mental clarity, and physical performance,” says Allison Brager, Ph.D. But hold on! Sleep experts also say there are times when napping might not be the best choice. Let’s dive into the perks and pitfalls of daily napping!
Benefits of Napping Every Day
Naps Can Be Restorative
Oh, the joy of a quick nap! Just a little snooze can leave you feeling mentally refreshed. You might wake up feeling more energetic and recharged. It’s like hitting the reset button! Research even shows that napping supports physical performance and recovery—especially for those of us who love to stay active!
Eric Zhou, Ph.D., says, “We experience a circadian rhythm dip in the early afternoon. This is a normal event that corresponds with many of us feeling sluggish and sleepy.” Naps can be incredibly restorative! If you didn’t get enough sleep the night before, a quick nap can be a lifesaver. “Napping daily is ideal for individuals who are chronically sleep-deprived and need to pay off sleep debt,” Brager explains.
Naps Can Boost Your Mood
Feeling a bit cranky? A nap might just be the solution! Research shows that napping can help regulate and improve mood. It can leave you feeling happier, with better self-control and more grit. I mean, who doesn’t want that? We’ve all been there—when we don’t get enough sleep, we can be a bit of a grump. A quick nap can be an easy fix to lift your spirits!
“Sleep, in general, balances our emotions,” says Lauri Leadley, CCSH, RPSGT.
Downsides of Napping Every Day
You May Feel Groggy After Your Nap
Now, let’s talk about the not-so-fun side of napping. Longer naps? Not always the best idea! Especially if you’re not a shift worker. If you sleep for 30 to 60 minutes, you might enter deep sleep. And waking up from deep sleep can leave you feeling groggy and disoriented. Yikes!
Brager warns, “Waking up from a poorly timed nap can leave you feeling disoriented, groggy, and more fatigued than before you lay down.” No one wants that!
You May Struggle to Fall Asleep at Night
Another downside? Napping at random times can confuse your body’s circadian clock. Your internal clock relies on consistent cues to regulate your sleep-wake cycle. If you nap at different times every day, it can be tough for your body to know when to be alert or sleepy. This might lead to a hard time falling asleep at night.
Long naps or napping too late in the day can also mess with your nighttime sleep. If your daily nap leaves you feeling great and doesn’t impact your nighttime sleep, then keep it up! But if you notice that your afternoon siesta is causing trouble at night, it might be time to rethink that nap.
Tips to Keep in Mind for Naps
Don’t rely too much on naps. Naps can be super helpful, but if you need one every day to function, it might be time to check in with a doctor.
Set an alarm! Keep your naps to about 20 minutes. “Ideally, 20 minutes can boost alertness and energy without entering deep sleep,” Leadley suggests.
Avoid napping after 2 or 3 p.m. This can help protect your restorative sleep at night.
Create a comfy sleep environment. A cool, quiet room can help you fall asleep faster. Consider using an eye mask or earplugs!
Our Expert Take
Short daily naps at the right times can restore energy and leave you feeling refreshed. They can also improve your mood and help you feel less irritable. But there are some downsides too. Waking up from a nap that’s a bit too long may leave you feeling groggy. And long naps or those taken late in the day can interfere with a good night’s sleep. Ultimately, quick daily naps can be healthy, experts say. But if a nap is the only way you can function, it’s probably a good idea to check in with a doctor.
